i went with my friend mo_ira. we drove two hours from Manchester, NH to Providence, RI in a terrential downpour and through the 5:00 traffic. took us 3 hours, but it was WELL WORTH IT. BECAUSE...
ROBERT PATTINSON CALLED IN FOR A Q&A SESSION BEFORE THE MOVIE.
Johnny White, who played Ronnie in the movie, was actually there in the theater, also answering questions himself.
the movie was supposed to be at like 9:15 but ended up getting delayed until about 10:00. the line wasn't as long as we expected it to be and the theater was nowhere NEAR filled. and tickets were only $10! BONUS.
so we all sat in our seats a little bit before 10:00. we sat through a little welcome speech from the dorkiest/cutest man who organized the film festival, and he tells us that he has a surprise for us.. THAT ROBERT PATTINSON WAS GOING TO CALL IN. there was pretty much no reaction from anyone which baffled me, so i was like "WOOO, ROBERT!!"
and then Johnny White comes out and starts answering questions. he caught everyone off guard because we were all expecting him to be doing his Q&A after the film. johnny is like a less hot version of robert pattinson, and i am not even joking. he did a lot of "idk... umm... uhh.. well... yes, no..yes... idk." and they have the same sense of humor.
THEN ROBERT CALLED.we see commotion going on on the side of the stage, and someone announces that they have robert pattinson on the phone. and so they do this in the most half-ass way possible... they put the cell on speakerphone and hold it up to the microphone so we can hear him, and they have johnny relay the questions to robert because he obbbbbbviously cannot hear us.
ETA: this is not an exact transcript of the interview. my friend and i brainstormed together as much as we could remember him saying. the order may be off, and the exact wording may be off.. but you get the gist of it pretty much.
they tell him to say hi...
RP: "Helloooo?" He explodes into giggles.
someone tells him that we're all here to ask him questions before they screen "How To Be" and that Johnny is here.
RP: *ignores us* "Hi Johnny, how have you been? I miss you."
JW: "Hey Rob. I'm good, I haven't seen you in awhile."
RP: "Yeah, we should get together soon." Johnny starts saying something about getting together in London, but Rob starts laughing because he realizes he's having a conversation with his friend and we're all listening.
And thennnnnnnnnnnnnnnn the questions start. Everyone is way more nervous asking Robert stuff than Johnny so it's much quieter and barely anyone asks anything. They have to encourage us again because we're all sort of in shock.
Why did you decide to take on the role of Art?RP: "I read the script and I liked it a lot, and Oliver was very nice. Also, Art has no self esteem and I'm sort of like that. Like I am self-conscious and I need reassurance on everything, like all the time."
Did you enjoy incorporating your own musical abilities into the film?RP: "Yes, well Art isn't very good. I like to think I'm much better than that in real life. I hope. Art is a bit of a git."
This has already taken up as much time as half of Johnny's interview because Robert takes about 10 minutes to answer a question, and it takes all of us forever to get the nerve to ask him a question. They have to start encouraging us again.
Where are you? Why aren't you here?RP: "I'm in LA." We all groan. Johnny says he's lying and he's actually on the rooftop. Robert also says he's filming a new movie, and I am SO SORRY but I already forget what it's called. I checked and it's not even up on his IMDB page. He also said who was in the movie with him, but I couldn't understand because he was mumbling hahaha.
How much of your own wardrobe did you use in the film?RP: He laughs. "Um, about 50% of the clothes belonged to me before the film, and I own most of the rest of them now too." We all laugh and he laughs with us. Someone asks which ones were his to start with. He says the USA shirt and the one that says 'a life'
THEN THEY TELL US ONLY ONE MORE QUESTION. Johnny got wayyy more time, but I think they just wanted to start the movie because it was already very delayed.
What's your favorite color? And..... [ she says the rest of this so fast it all comes out as one word ] I baked you a cake on your birthday with your face on it.AND ROB'S RESPONSE, HAHAHAHA. MY FAVORITE PART OF THE NIGHT.
RP: "Oh." We all start cracking up. "My favorite color............um........i dunno......um........ uhhhhh................................................................." Someone on stage starts talking because they think he's not going to answer, and all of a sudden he shouts, "BROWN!" and starts laughing hysterically. You can tell he like looked around his room for the first color he could find. And then, "And I don't actually like cake very much. At all."
Then they allowed one more question because it was someone who worked there, onstage.
Robert, if you were stranded on a desert island with only the cast of "How To Be," who would you eat and why?RP: He laughs. "Um... I dunno." He takes a good 30 seconds to think about it with some more um's and idk's. "Johnny doesn't look all that appetizing." We all laugh. "I dunno, I would probably just eat myself because they're all such nice people." Awww

And then we had to say goodbye.

It was a giant chorus of "THANK YOU ROOOOBBBBBBBB!" He giggled again. Love him.
"How To Be" was hilarious, btw. I was constantly entertained. Some parts were sad, some parts made me pee with laughter. Robert's performance was perfection. He was extremely awkward. It's hard to believe that he can go from playing someone like Art to someone like Edward Cullen. All in all, a GREAT movie and I recommend it to everyone once it's in theaters or released to DVD or whatever.
