Golden Girls star Estelle Getty has passed away early on Tuesday in Los Angeles, California, after suffering from Lewy Body Dementia, a progressive brain disease. She was 84.
Getty played Sophia Petrillo on the long-running comedy, and also had roles on the big screen in movies like Tootsie, Mannequin and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.
"Our mother-daughter relationship was one of the greatest comic duos ever, and I will miss her," Bea Arthur, who played Getty’s daughter on Golden Girls said.
"Estelle always wanted to be an actress and she achieved that goal beyond her dreams. Don't feel sad about her passing, she will always be with us in her crowning achievement," co-star Rue McClanahan said.
Getty is survived by her sons Carl and Barry Gettleman
