The Sunday Herald Sun reports today that Cyndi Lauper will be a mentor for next week's top 11 performance, which has the 1980s theme.
CHART-TOPPING performer Cyndi Lauper will fly to Australia to be a mentor on Australian Idol next Sunday.
Lauper, who is promoting her new album Bring Ya To The Brink, will mentor the aspiring Idols on Sunday's show and then perform her enduring hit, Time after Time, on the show on Monday.Lauper, who has been a celebrity mentor on the Canadian version of Idol, said she wanted to help the singers improve as performers and artists rather than heap empty criticism on them.
She said she was happy to pass on the knowledge she had gained from her glittering career.
"Because I have studied singing most of my life, naturally I can look at them and figure out what it is that they need to do," Lauper said.
"There are all these little things you have to check out so you know what the hell is going on in that person's body and what they are doing so you can actually help them, as opposed to standing there and going 'well I thought that performance was . . .'
"Who gives a s--- about that?"
Lauper, famous for hits such as Girls Just Want to Have Fun and True Colours, said she liked Idol.
"It is a venue. Right now with the way the industry is, it is a great venue for them to get exposure," she said.
"It teaches you a lot about the business. They always used to say cream rises to the top, and it is true, but on a show like this it is the fan base voting that you have to be aware of.
"I am doing it to help the ones who really want to sing."
The US star said the Idol contestants should not let go of their dreams if they did not win the show.
"If you don't make it, it does not mean you suck," she said.
"I cannot tell you how many people still tell me I suck at stuff and still say 'hey, what kind of lyrics are these?'.
"I am going to look at these kids and really try to understand what they want to achieve and let them understand that this is a small piece of the journey."
Lauper was in Australia earlier this year to perform at the Mardi Gras.
"I find Australians very down-to-earth, warm and friendly people."

WESTERN Australia's final Australian Idol hope is into the top 12 and plans to go all the way to the top.
Talking by phone from Sydney, Jonny Taylor said all his musical dreams came true when he made the final 12 on Australian Idol last week.
He is hoping for a career in music and recognition at the end of his Australian Idol journey.
Taylor grew up in Busselton and left home four years ago at 18 to have a crack at the music scene in Perth.
His favourite Perth band is Karnivool - he thinks they are amazing.
He married his soul-mate Nicole in January and they have made Bunbury their temporary home.
Taylor's passion for music started early.
"I was a pretty quiet kid and kept very much to myself," he said. "I liked it that way and had a tight circle of friends.
"Classical guitar was my escape from the real world.
"I hated school and couldn't wait to get home and study classical guitar.
"That is when my love for music started, but I was very lucky to have an older brother who was a drummer and so he had heaps of cool grunge music in the 90's.
"So I grew up listening to Sound Garden and Pearl Jam."
Taylor is still into the darker music but likes the acoustic sound with heavy rock.
Last November he was involved in a motorbike accident.
"I was heading home on Main St Osborne Park and a fellow ran through a stop sign and pulled out in front of me," he explained.
"I flew over the handlebars and broke my femur and had some neck and back injuries after I collided head first with the car."
Taylor was in two or three heavy alternative rock bands in Perth, but left after he decided he wanted to pursue a solo career.
He was persuaded to enter the Idol auditions by his wife.
"It was a spur of the moment decision - I had nothing to do on that Sunday," said Taylor.
"At the auditions I sang Rusty Cage, the Johnny Cash version of an old Soundgarden song.
"D!cko's response was not entirely positive but the others were into it.
"Then I did an original song which went down really well and I think that's what sealed the deal for me."
While the lead up to his first Idol performance means he is busy he misses Nicole most at the end of the day when he is on his own.
"We are so flat out during the day it doesn't become an issue until night time," he said.
"It is when the day starts winding up that I get lonely and miss her."
On Sunday the final 12 will be performing a song in honour of their musical idol.
"My song is from one of my all-time favourite bands and one of my biggest influences," he said.
Watch Taylor and the other 11 Australian Idol contestants on Sunday at 7.30pm on Channel Ten.
