TRYING to understand Irishman Brian McFadden over a fuzzy phone line is like having someone throw a handful of Scrabble tiles in your face and asking you to read it back.
The singer was calling from Sydney after spending Thursday night with the remaining five contestants on Australian Idol, and he gave former Adelaide boy Wes Carr the big thumbs-up for the win this year. We think.
"Wes is more of an artist, vibey and strong. For a quiet man he is a leader," he said.
"The other contestants said Wes is the favourite, they think he's going to win. I can see why they would say that. But it all depends on what people see as the right mix."
A chat with Wes was a little easier to decipher, with the 26-year-old sharing his thoughts on being an "overnight" success after a decade in the industry. "I can't comprehend that people are sitting in Dubbo, or wherever, and texting my name and I don't even know them," he said.
The Gawler boy, who was "politely asked to leave Trinity College" at 15 and describes himself as "a bit of a rebel" in his earlier years, plays guitar, piano, harmonica, drums and bass. He's looking forward to tonight's Michael Jackson show when he'll sing Black Or White.

Jermaine was in Sydney to do promotional work for Foxtel when he was invited by Idol producers to appear on the show.

IRISH singer-songwriter Brian McFadden last week made a visit to the Australian Idol house to offer support and advice to the remaining contestants.
"There are some big characters in there," he says.
Mark Spano, the remaining Victorian in the Idol top five, says McFadden's visit was valuable.
"He was saying be truthful to yourself and learn from your mistakes," he says.
Spano has split with make-up artist Lynne O'Brien, who he hooked up with during a shoot for the show a couple of months ago.
"It's probably not the right time for a relationship. It's a bit distracting," he says.
