I remember seeing the trailers for this and wondering two things: is there a point to this and what possessed Kate Hudson to wear that awful wig???
Yesterday I watched it for two reasons, it was on and there was nothing else to watch.
It starts off OK- Roxanne's (Naomi Watts) husband leaves her while she is three months pregnant, seemingly for no reason. The same day, Roxanne's sister Isabel (Kate Hudson) turns up in France to help with the impending birth.
Then, the story becomes disjointed and confusing. The birth is months away, why is Isabel even there? She lives her own life, dating some old guy as his "mistress" which entitles her to expensive French desgner handbags and some occasional s ex with a guy old enough to be her father.
Then there's the sub-plot of the painting. Should it be shipped back to California to be displayed in a museum, or left in France to be divided during the divorce? The painting is a huge part of the movie and all through it, I'm thinking, "It's a painting! get over it!"
There are scenes that come from nowhere and lead to nowhere, such as Isabel's first meeting with the son of Olivia Pace (an American writer played by Glenn Close). She meets him and the very next scene they're in bed together watching TV dubbed by French voices. Although amusing to see Bart Simpson speaking French, are Isabel and the dude sleeping together? Did they already know each other? Why are they in bed watching television anyway?? It's never explained and she goes on to buy lingerie to impress the older guy anyway.
There's another subplot involving the American husband of the Russian lady who is sleeping with Roxanne's husband but there's no point to him being there.
But the most annoying part was Kate Hudson's hair. She went from her beautiful blonde locks to a shockingly awful wig. The cut made her look fifty years older and it was slightly grey as well. A seriously bad fashion move.
It's all very strange and I got to the end and thought it was the most useless movie I have ever seen.
